An old bridge known as Nanhu in Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin Province, was demolished with explosives on Sunday.

The bridge, 149.9 meters long and 25 meters wide, was broken down with 710 kilograms of explosives in just 3.5 seconds early on Sunday morning. The debris will be cleaned up in three to five days.

Built in 1978, Nanhu Bridge came to be seen as a potential safety hazard. It will be replaced by a new bridge for cars and pedestrians, which is set to open to traffic at the end of September. The new bridge was designed to last for 100 years.
